From PhD to Policy Adviser will explore Helen's transition from microbiology research to a career in science policy. Drawing on experiences from a PhD and early career in microbiology and a current role as a Policy Adviser in the Office for Life Sciences, the talk will outline what the move into policy looks like in practice, how scientific skills translate beyond the lab, and what working in a government policy team involves day to day. The session will be particularly relevant for early‑career researchers interested in how their training can open up a range of impactful career pathways.
Helen completed her PhD at University College London in 2025, where her research investigated the bacteria found in hospital sink environments. She is now a Policy Adviser in the Office for Life Sciences, supporting the development and delivery of policies and projects in the UK Life Sciences sector.
