Phillipa Burns

Phillipa trained to be a Consultant Clinical scientist as part of the National School of Healthcare Science, Higher Specialist Scientific Trainee (HSST) programme. Phillipa started her career as a PHLS graduate trainee in Cardiff in 2002, moving to Manchester to work for the Health Protection Agency, later Public Health England, in 2007. Phillipa was one of the first Biomedical scientists to attain clinical scientist equivalence, she holds dual registration with the HCPC. She practised as a Biomedical scientist from 2002 until 2018, reaching the level of Chief Biomedical Scientist in 2017.
She moved from Manchester to Hull in 2018 to start clinical training, completing the FRCPath examinations alongside a Clinical Doctorate at the University of Manchester. Her research focuses on blood stream infections in people who use drugs, exploring healthcare inequalities faced by marginalised social groups.
She is passionate about the progression of the Biomedical Science workforce and has worked as part of the Medical Microbiology advisory panel of the IBMS since 2018, focusing on developing the specialist qualifications and the Congress programme. Her wider scientific interests include respiratory infections in people with cystic fibrosis, antimicrobial resistance and stewardship, the implementation of sequencing technology and the development of national guidance for laboratories.
