Community Outreach Grant

NEW for 2026, a new grant for members leading activities that promote public engagement, education, and community involvement in applied microbiology.

The Community Outreach Grant supports AMI members to bring microbiology to life through small-scale projects that inspire curiosity and connect science with the public. From creative ideas and learning resources to games, books, and community collaborations, the grant helps members turn engaging outreach concepts into reality.

 
This grant champions creativity, accessibility, and inclusion - empowering projects that engage, inspire, and make microbiology accessible to all.
 

 

Eligibility Eligibility

  • Applicant must be a Full, Associate or Fellow member with at least 13 months of continuous membership.
  • Open to members from academic, industry, clinical, or community-based settings.
  • Projects must demonstrate clear public engagement value and alignment with AMI’s strategic goals.
  • Collaborative and interdisciplinary projects are strongly encouraged.

  • Funding available: Up to £1,000 per project (smaller amounts may be awarded for shorter or lower-cost initiatives).
  • Funding may support venue hire, materials, travel, publicity, or collaboration costs directly related to the outreach activity.
  • Projects should aim to promote microbiology to non-specialist audiences and encourage participation from diverse communities.

  • A completed application form.
  • A concise project proposal (maximum 500 words) describing aims, audience, activities, and anticipated impact.
  • A budget breakdown with justification for each cost item.
  • Details of any partners or collaborators involved in delivery.

  • Relevance to applied microbiology and AMI’s mission of public engagement and education.
  • Creativity and potential for community impact.
  • Feasibility and clear use of funds.
  • Evidence of planning for inclusivity and accessibility.

Post-Project Requirements Post-Project Requirements

  • A short report and photos (where possible) submitted within six weeks of project completion, summarising outcomes and participant feedback.
  • Acknowledgement of AMI’s support in all promotional materials and communications.

Application Process Application Process

  • Applications are reviewed quarterly, with decisions communicated within four weeks of each review date.
  • Applications must be submitted at least six weeks before the planned activity date.
