Lead Editor role for Sustainable Microbiology

AMI invites applications for a newly created Lead Editor role on its open access journal, Sustainable Microbiology, for an initial 3-year term starting in January 2027.

About Sustainable Microbiology

Launched in 2024. Sustainable Microbiology is an open access, interdisciplinary journal focused on the application of microbiology in achieving a sustainable future. It is the newest journal from AMI and, in line with AMI’s strategy, the Journal covers our six goals, which in turn are aligned with six of the UN SDGs:

  • Food security (UN SDG2: Zero Hunger)
  • One Health (UN SDG3: Good health and wellbeing)
  • Ocean Sustainability (UN SDG14: Life below water)
  • Healthy Land (UN SDG15: Life on land)
  • Clean Water (UN SDG6: Clean water and sanitation)
  • Climate Action (UN SDG13: Climate action)

The Role

We are seeking a new Lead Editor to work with our Editor-in-Chief in the Senior Editorial team to take responsibility for the growth and development of one/two of the above goals.

We require the candidate to have expertise in one or more of the following areas: 
Microbial biotechnology, applied microbial engineering, precision fermentation, systems biology, protein engineering, bioenergy and biofuels, microbial biochemistry.
 

The Lead Editor will be responsible for:

  • Triaging papers and assigning appropriate Associate Editors to manage peer review
  • Identifying hot topics and authors for commissioned content
  • Identifying key events and other potential collaborations and promotional opportunities for the journal
  • Promoting the journal through their networks and speaking engagements and soliciting high-quality submissions

The Candidate
  • Will be an active researcher with an international network and should be able to demonstrate their stature and impact in their field
  • Will have experience in a senior editorial role handling submissions for a reputable journal and some knowledge of publishing ethics
  • Will be a team player, committed to providing excellent author service and to AMI’s diversity and inclusion values
