Submission to Defra Consultation: Regulation of Genetic Technologies (with RSB)

AMI contributed to this Royal Society of Biology response to the UK Government’s consultation on regulating genetic technologies, including genome editing.

AMI (then operating as the Society for Applied Microbiology) contributed to the Royal Society of Biology’s submission to Defra’s consultation on the regulation of genetic technologies.

The response highlighted the need for a proportionate, science-based regulatory framework that focuses on the characteristics and impacts of products rather than the methods used to produce them. It drew on the expertise of RSB’s Member Organisations (including AMI) to emphasise the potential of genome editing to address urgent challenges in food security, animal welfare, and sustainable agriculture. The submission also underscored the importance of transparency, public trust, and global alignment in shaping future regulation.
