Submission to the APPG on Diversity and Inclusion in STEM: 2022

AMI championed action on anti-racism and anti-ableism in response to the APPG’s call for ideas, reinforcing its commitment to equity and inclusion across the microbiology community.

In 2021, Applied Microbiology International (then operating as the Society for Applied Microbiology) responded to the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Diversity and Inclusion in STEM’s call for ideas by advocating a focus on anti-racism and anti-ableism.

Through the establishment of its Anti-Racism Working Group, AMI began reviewing its internal practices, offering safe spaces, and engaging with sector-wide training. Alongside this, AMI acknowledged systemic ableism in STEM and committed to implementing the NADSN’s recommendations to better support disabled scientists. These initiatives contributed to the APPG’s decision to explore “Regional STEM Skills Inequity” as its 2022 project.
