Submission to the APPG on Diversity & Inclusion in STEM - Call for ideas 2026

AMI submitted two proposals to the APPG on D&I STEM Call for Ideas for 2026. One urging the group to learn from global best practice to improve D&I in UK STEM, and another evaluating the impact of the UK visa systems on STEM diversity.

Our submission set out two practical, evidence-led proposals aimed at strengthening the UK’s STEM workforce by improving diversity and ensuring the UK remains globally competitive in attracting and retaining talent.

  • Learning from global best practice to improve D&I in STEM: AMI proposed a comparative international mapping exercise to identify which policies and initiatives most effectively improve gender diversity in STEM. By examining leading countries and linking D&I outcomes to innovation, skills and regional growth, this work would generate evidence-based recommendations to help the UK adopt proven approaches and strengthen both representation and competitiveness.
  • Evaluating the impact of the UK visa system on STEM diversity: We recommended a focused inquiry into how visa costs and regulatory complexity affect the UK’s ability to attract a diverse international STEM workforce. By combining sector evidence with international comparisons, this work would support clear policy recommendations to reduce barriers, improve accessibility, and ensure the UK remains an attractive destination for global scientific talent.
