Submission to the House of Lords Debate on Issues Relating to Women and Science
Our submission highlights the persistent barriers faced by women in STEM, including pay inequality, reduced recognition, slower career progression, and higher rates of harassment. Caring responsibilities and limited childcare support further restrict opportunities, while gender stereotypes and a lack of visible role models continue to discourage girls and young women from pursuing STEM careers.
The submission emphasises that improving gender diversity is essential for stronger research and innovation, as diverse teams are more effective and resilient. It also adopts an intersectional perspective, noting that overlapping identities can intensify these challenges, and calls for sustained action to remove barriers and enable women to fully contribute to scientific progress. Our response has been deposisted in the UK House of Lords library.
