Now in its 31st year, the Molecular Microbial Ecology Group (MMEG) meeting returns 15-16 December 2025 at the Alan Walters Building, University of Birmingham, hosted by Professor James McDonald.

MMEG is a welcoming, lively space for early career researchers and group leaders to share their work and connect across the microbial ecology community. This year’s programme spans all aspects of microbial ecology, including environmental microbiology, biogeochemical cycling, host-microbe interactions and applied microbiology, with nearly all talks delivered by early career speakers.

The event features plenary sessions, posters, and exhibition. Abstract submissions are invited for a poster with optional 1-minute-1-slide ‘poster pitch’ presentation. You can also submit an abstract for a 15-minute talk (10-mins plus 5-mins questions). Abstract submission is open for all career stages from undergraduate, master’s students, technical staff, PhD researchers and Postdocs.

On Monday night we head to the Indian Brewery Taproom for bold food, house-brewed beers, and lots of fun. While the atmosphere is informal, the connections forged here often span entire careers. Food and selected drinks are included with your registration.

Registration is £115 for early career researchers (undergraduates, postgraduates, PhDs, and postdocs) and £135 for general delegates (PIs, industry, exhibitors, and others).

Financial support is available for AMI Members via the AMI Student Travel Bursary  Non-members who attended MMEG 2023/24, and those registered to attend MMEG 2025, get 50% off AMI membership. The discount will be automatically applied at checkout. We encourage bursary applicants to seek supervisor/department support first so we can prioritise those who need it most. Preference is given to those who have submitted an abstract.
