Now in its 31st year, the Molecular Microbial Ecology Group (MMEG) meeting returns on 15 and 16 December 2025 at the Alan Walters Building, University of Birmingham, hosted by Professor James McDonald.

MMEG is a welcoming, lively space for early career researchers to share their work and connect across the microbial ecology community. This year’s programme spans environmental microbiology, biogeochemical cycling, host-microbe interactions and applied microbiology, with nearly all talks delivered by early career speakers.

There’s a 3-minute, 3-slide challenge for undergraduates, master’s students and early-stage PhDs, and 15-minute talks for later-stage PhDs and early postdocs. Posters offer another opportunity to present at any stage, with plenty of lively discussion throughout.

On Monday night we head to the Indian Brewery Taproom for bold food, house-brewed beers and, if history is any guide, some questionable dancing. All food and drink are free to registered delegates — and while the atmosphere is informal, the connections forged here often span entire careers.
