Built environment and microbiome engineering: Responsible Development and Engagement
This joint session explores how microbiome engineering is being applied to the built environment (from hospital sinks to household mould) and why responsible development is essential. Dr Jennifer Kuzma introduces insights from the NSF Precision Microbiome Engineering (PreMiEr) Center, highlighting governance frameworks, societal issues, and principles for responsible innovation. Dr Kristen Landreville shares findings from national surveys and community studies on public perceptions, concerns, and hopes for microbiome engineering. Together, their presentations show how technical advances must be paired with ethical, inclusive, and transparent engagement to guide healthier and more trustworthy applications.
