Defending Earth’s terrestrial microbiome

Earth’s microbial biodiversity is under threat - but restoring soil microbiomes may hold the key to healthier, more resilient ecosystems.

Drawing on evidence from 80 experiments, this article shows that restoring native soil microbiomes can boost plant biomass by 64% on average. It highlights the importance of conserving microbial biodiversity - particularly soil fungi - and using it to build healthier, more resilient ecosystems.
