Submission to the APPG on Diversity and Inclusion in STEM: Equity in the UK STEM workforce

AMI (then operating as the Society for Applied Microbiology) contributed to this inquiry from the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Diversity and Inclusion in STEM, focusing on equity across the UK STEM workforce. Drawing from a detailed membership survey, the submission highlights evidence gaps, career progression challenges, and systemic issues that disproportionately affect underrepresented groups in STEM.

This submission to the APPG on Diversity and Inclusion in STEM outlines the Society’s insights into equity issues within the UK STEM workforce.

Using data collected through a detailed membership-wide survey, the response covers demographic patterns, barriers across protected characteristics, gaps in policy implementation, and the longer-term implications of COVID-19 and Brexit on equity and inclusion. It includes recommendations for future government and sector-wide action and provides practical reflections on both recruitment and retention within STEM, grounded in lived experience across academia and industry.
