Submission to the Science and Technology Committee: Emerging Diseases and Learnings from Covid-19
Applied Microbiology International’s submission to the House of Commons Science and Technology Committee highlights key microbial and environmental factors that influence the emergence of zoonotic diseases, with particular attention to antimicrobial resistance (AMR), climate change, and biosecurity.
Drawing on member expertise, the response emphasises the importance of sustained PCR testing capacity, surveillance infrastructure, and coordinated One Health approaches. Recommendations include tackling AMR as part of pandemic preparedness, supporting surveillance technologies and data modelling, and reducing silos across disciplines and borders to strengthen resilience against future outbreaks.
