Submission to the Under the Microscope Inquiry: Portable Diagnostics and AMR Detection
AMI’s 2025 submission to the Under the Microscope inquiry calls for UK investment in portable diagnostic tools that meet international microbiological standards.
These tools would support rapid detection of pathogens and antimicrobial resistance genes across clinical, environmental, food and veterinary contexts. The submission highlights the limitations of current diagnostics and reiterates the urgent need identified in the 2016 O'Neill review on AMR. AMI argues that handheld devices could improve public health, reduce inappropriate antibiotic use, and position the UK as a leader in global AMR surveillance.
