Submission to UK Parliament on the antimicrobial potential of phages
Applied Microbiology International submitted evidence to the House of Commons Science and Technology Committee inquiry on Realising the antimicrobial potential of bacteriophages.
Our response outlines both the promise and the challenges of phage therapy, covering the current scientific evidence base, regulatory approaches in other countries, and the UK’s opportunity to lead globally in phage innovation. The submission includes examples of existing UK research, potential regulatory frameworks, and strategic recommendations to support investment in phage biobanks, research funding, and NHS-led therapeutic development.
We emphasise the need for a joined-up national strategy that supports innovation, flexible regulation, and long-term capacity-building in this critical area of antimicrobial resistance.
