Dorothy Jones Diversity and Inclusion Achievement Award

The Dorothy Jones Diversity and Inclusion Achievement Award honours Dorothy Jones' commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion within STEM. This award aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals which recognise that reduced inequalities are a core factor in attaining peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. This sits alongside strategies for achieving gender equality, eliminating disparities in education outcomes, ensuring equal access to education for all, and strengthening the global scientific workforce. This award acknowledges individuals or organisations that have made significant strides in these areas. It celebrates initiatives that dismantle barriers to participation and representation, especially for underrepresented groups, and recognises inclusive research and experimental design and practice. 

The recipient of the award shall receive:

  • £3,000 in prize money
  • A commemorative plaque highlighting their achievement
  • An invitation to submit an article to an AMI-owned journal
  • The opportunity to present/chair at an AMI conference, webinar, roundtable, or similar event
Who should apply:
  1. Researchers actively advancing diversity and inclusion in their field.
  2. Organisations and Institutions making significant contributions to diversity and inclusion both internally and externally through policy and practice.
  3. Educators and Academics dedicated to developing and promoting inclusive educational programs.
  4. Advocates and Activists significantly contributing to diversity and inclusion.
  5. Interdisciplinary Teams demonstrating a commitment to diversity and inclusion in their research and experimental designs and practice.

 

Nominations close 26 July 2024. Following this, AMI's internal awards panel will evaluate the nominations and decide on a winner, which will be announced on 16 October.

The Dorothy Jones Diversity and Inclusion Achievement Award emphasises the importance of ending all inequalities in STEM. It celebrates the impactful contributions in fostering inclusivity and diversity within the scientific community, highlighting the critical role of applied microbiology and the other life sciences in addressing challenges faced by underrepresented and marginalised groups in science and research.
