Applied Microbiology International (AMI) has issued a call for a new member to join our team as an Elected Trustee on the AMI Board from September 2026.

At AMI we fundamentally believe that microbiology can solve the world’s most pressing challenges and that global issues need to be solved by global teams.

Our Trustees play a vital role in the organisation. They contribute to key strategic decisions and help guide the successful development and governance of AMI.

The Board of Trustees is AMI’s governing body, which comprises 13 trustees, each of whom are responsible for the successful running of the organisation. The Board meets three times a year and plays a vital role in making sure that AMI achieves its core purpose.

Direction and oversight

The Trustees work with the Chief Executive to set the charity’s strategic direction and provide oversight. They are ultimately responsible for safeguarding all AMI assets and ensuring these are used to achieve the organisation’s charitable aims. The Trustees also support and challenge the senior leadership team to enable AMI to grow and thrive.

Nominations are invited from AMI members who would like to serve as a trustee for a period of three years. One candidate will be presented to AMI’s members for election in May 2026.

“AMI believes that success is built on having teams whose backgrounds and personal experiences reflect the diversity of our membership base,” said Head of Governance Katherine Roberts.

“It is not necessary to have previous board committee experience as training will be provided. Qualified applicants will receive consideration without regard to their race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or disability.”

What we are looking for

  • A microbiologist who can demonstrate a commitment to the Vision, Mission and Values of AMI.
  • An individual who will bring energy, enthusiasm, and commitment to the role.
  • Ability to think creatively and strategically, exercise good, independent judgement and work effectively as a trustee.
  • A strong personal commitment to diversity and inclusion.

You do not need previous governance experience – we will provide a full induction and training.
